Bob Brue is an essential figure in the history of elevating Wisconsin regional art within a national context. Brue, who went from being a widely recognized golf professional to a fine art collector, was the first to encourage the Museum of Wisconsin Art to narrow its collecting focus to regional art. At the time, no other museums in the state were actively collecting Wisconsin artwork and some were even deaccessioning such pieces. With Brue’s encouragement and provision of artworks, the Museum of Wisconsin Art was able to concentrate on enhancing the visibility of Wisconsin’s regional artists along with spreading awareness and knowledge of the aesthetic and historical value of Wisconsin’s art.
