Ruth St. John West was a prominent civic figure and a true friend of the arts in Manitowoc. Ruth moved from her native New York to Manitowoc in 1932 with her husband John West, who would eventually succeed his father as President of Manitowoc Company. Mrs. West’s enduring legacy was her belief that world-class artwork should be available and accessible to all. An avid arts patron, Mrs. West served on the Rahr-West Art Museum Board of Directors from 1969 to 1989. During her tenure, she spearheaded campaigns to add two dedicated art exhibition wings to the museum. Ruth West’s generosity and keen collector’s eye built the Rahr-West into one of the state’s best collections – one that includes original, international artwork from O’Keeffe, Warhol, Picasso, William Bouguereau, Rembrandt Peale, Andrew Wyeth, Sam Francis, Roberto Matta, Stuart Davis and more.
