Sister Thomasita Fessler

Sister Thomasita Fessler, also known as Majella Nicola Fessler, was born in Milwaukee in 1912. She joined the Sisters of St. Francis at the age of seventeen and went on to graduate from UW-Milwaukee and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Sister Thomasita had a dynamic personality and traveled the world, leading more than forty art tours and inspired many students throughout her long career. She created over six hundred paintings that mirrored the twentieth century modern and abstract forms that she had explored through her travels and college studies. Sister Thomasita went on to found the Art Department at Cardinal Stritch University and the acclaimed San Damiano Art Gallery and Studio. Sister Thomasita was the first woman inducted into the Wisconsin Architects’ Association.
