Walter Nottingham was born in Great Falls, Montana in 1930. Nottingham began teaching at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in 1962 where he and his colleagues helped create the art department as it exists today. It was at UW-River Falls that Nottingham became interested in weaving and taught himself the art form. From that point on, he built an international reputation as a fiber artist.
